This is your field manual for the moment it's actually happening. Keep it short. Keep it ready.
Do the breathing reset now, not after things heat up.
Step 1 - Spot the warning. Her tone shifted. She said "we need to talk." You can feel it loading. That's your cue.
Step 2 - Breathe. In for four counts, hold for four, out for six. Repeat five or six times. The exhale is what slows your heart rate, not the inhale.
Step 3 - Name one true thing. Pick a steady sentence. "I can stay in this without fixing it right now" works.
Step 4 - Set your exit phrase now. Decide what you'll say if your body starts to max out. Don't write it mid fight.
Say to her before you start:
"I know this matters to you, and I want to actually be here for it. Give me one minute to get my head straight first."
Chest tight. Heart racing. Her voice sounding far away. That's your signal, not a failure.
Use the exit phrase the second you notice it, not after you've already gone silent.
"My heart's racing right now and I'm scared I'll go quiet on you. Give me ten minutes, and I'm coming back to finish this."
Set a visible timer if you can. It gives her something concrete instead of silence to read into.
Don't pretend you were listening.
"I just went somewhere else for a second there. I'm back now. Can you say that last part again?"
Let her repeat herself, even with some frustration. Re-entry matters more than a clean recovery.
Go to her first. Don't wait for her to find you.
"Okay, I'm back, like I said I would be. I want to keep going. Where were we?"
Following through on the return is what builds trust over time. The break only works if the comeback is real.
Some nights you won't catch it in time. That's not proof this doesn't work.
Afterward, once you're back online:
"I shut down on you back there and I know how that feels from your side. I'm not proud of it. Can we try the conversation again, maybe tomorrow?"
One clear acknowledgment beats five minutes of self criticism. Keep the focus on her, not on managing your own guilt.
A man who leaves and comes back on schedule, every single time, teaches her something words alone can't. He's still here.
That consistency is what eventually turns into her reaching for your hand again, texting you during the day, wanting you close at night.
