This walks you through one real conversation about rebuilding trust, plus the daily moves that back it up.
Pick a quiet, low-stakes moment, not right after a fight and not five minutes before either of you has to leave. Have one small, specific commitment ready to offer, not a vague promise to "do better." Expect no visible reaction from her the first time. That's normal, not failure.
Write down one thing you can promise and keep without fail this week. Keep it small enough that missing it would be an actual surprise, like sending a text the moment plans change instead of after the fact. Bigger promises can come later, once smaller ones have held for a while.
Say this:
"I know I broke something between us. I'm not asking you to trust me right now, today. I just want you to see the same guy keep his word every day until it stops being a question."
Stay quiet for a moment after you say it. Let it sit instead of filling the silence.
Alt phrasing: "I'm not looking for you to say anything back. I just wanted you to hear where my head's at."
She might say it's too late, or that she's heard this before. Don't argue the point.
Say this:
"You're allowed to feel that way. I'm not here to convince you tonight, just to keep coming back."
Alt phrasing: "That's fair. I'm not asking for anything from you right now, just letting you know where I stand."
Connector: If you tend to agree with everything to keep the peace, you'll want to tell her whatever keeps things calm right now. Say instead: "I want to keep this calm too, but I need to say one true thing even if it's uncomfortable." Alt phrasing: "I don't want to just tell you what you want to hear here."
Defender: If you tend to meet doubt with your own evidence, you'll want to list everything you've done right this month. Say instead: "You're right that I broke this. I'm not going to argue that point with you." Alt phrasing: "I hear you. I'm not going to defend myself right now."
Escalator: If you tend to react big and press for reassurance, you'll want to ask her to tell you it's working. Say instead: "I'm not going to ask you how you're feeling about this today. Take whatever time you need." Alt phrasing: "I'll let this sit instead of pushing for an answer right now."
Withdrawer: If you tend to go quiet and leave the room, stay put instead. Say instead: "I don't have a lot of words right now, but I'm staying here." Alt phrasing: "I'm not walking away. I just need a minute before I say more."
These are small, repeatable moves, not one-time gestures. Doing them once won't count for much. Doing them every day for months is the actual work.
Text her the moment a plan changes, not after the fact and not with an explanation attached. Answer questions about your whereabouts fully and immediately, even the third time she asks the same thing a different way. Keep any promise you make small enough to guarantee, and if you can't guarantee it, don't say it out loud yet. Notice out loud when you catch yourself wanting to over-explain or ask for reassurance, and stop yourself before you do it.
Nothing about this moves in a straight line. Expect a good week followed by a harder one, sometimes for no reason you can point to. Ordinary logistics usually settle first, she stops flinching when you're late. Small physical affection tends to return before deeper conversation about the relationship itself reopens. Treat any one bad day as noise, not proof the whole thing has stalled.
If she gets upset, cries, or tells you flatly this isn't working, don't argue for her belief. Say: "I hear you. I'm still here." Then give her the space she's asking for without leaving the relationship in the process.
If your own chest tightens and your voice speeds up, ask for twenty minutes, name the exact time you'll return, and come back at that time without fail. A missed return during a break undoes the trust the break itself was supposed to protect, so treat that timer as a promise, not a suggestion.
Pick one small, checkable promise to keep in the next 24 hours. Follow through on it exactly as said, and don't mention it again afterward as proof of anything. Let the pattern speak for itself over the following weeks.
