How to Talk to Your Wife When Sex Has Gone Stale – Playbook
This is your field guide for the moment you’ve decided to finally say something. Keep it close. Read it before the conversation, not during.
Before You Start
Pick the right moment. Not in bed. Not right before sleep. Not when either of you is stressed about something else. Side by side works better than face to face for hard conversations: a drive, doing dishes, sitting outside.
Decide which rung you’re starting on:
- Rung 1: You haven’t talked about this at all yet. Start with connection, not sex.
- Rung 2: You’ve both acknowledged something feels off. Name the physical distance.
- Rung 3: You’ve had at least one softer conversation. Ask about her experience.
- Rung 4: Emotional safety is established. Name what you want directly.
If you’re not sure, start on Rung 1. Going lower than necessary is not a mistake.
The Opening Scripts
Rung 1: The Soft Open
“I’ve been thinking that we’ve felt kind of disconnected lately. Not in a bad way, just… distant. I miss feeling close to you.”
Then stop. Let her respond. Don’t fill the silence.
Rung 2: Naming the Physical Distance
“I realized I can’t remember the last time we were just physically close without it being purposeful. Like we used to just reach for each other. I miss that.”
[Pause.]
“I’m not putting this on you. I know I’ve probably pulled back too.”
Rung 3: Asking About Her Experience
“I’ve been doing some thinking about us, about the distance we’ve both noticed. I want to understand what’s going on for you. What has the last while felt like from your side?”
Then listen. Don’t problem-solve. Don’t jump to your experience. Let her finish.
Rung 4: The Honest Want
“I want to be honest about something because I think you deserve to know. I miss being close to you in that way. I’m not trying to pressure you, I know it’s been a while and I know we’ve both been in our own heads. But it matters to me, and I didn’t want to keep pretending it doesn’t.”
[Pause, keep your voice even.]
“What would help you feel more connected to me?”
Listening Rules
These matter more than the scripts.
- Don’t explain yourself while she’s talking. Wait.
- Don’t problem-solve in real time. You’ll pull focus from her experience to your solutions.
- Do reflect back what she said before adding your own. “So what I’m hearing is you’ve felt like I’ve been somewhere else.” Then wait for her to confirm.
- If she goes quiet, stay present. Silence is not the same as shutdown.

Reading Her Response
If It Goes Sideways
If the conversation falls apart, stop. Don’t try to fix it in the moment. Give it 24 to 48 hours.
Then use the recovery move:
“That conversation didn’t go how I wanted it to. I don’t think I said it well, and I think it came across as criticism when that wasn’t where I was coming from at all.”
[Pause.]
“What I was trying to say is that I miss you. That’s really all it was.”
What to Watch For
Progress in this conversation rarely looks like a breakthrough. Watch for:
- She stays in the conversation instead of shutting it down.
- She asks a question about what you said, any question.
- In the days after, small casual touch increases.
- She makes a bid for connection she hasn’t made in a while.
The Bottom Line
You’re not solving the whole thing tonight. You’re opening a door that’s been closed for a while.
One conversation won’t close a gap that took years to open. What you’re building is the ability to talk about this without it becoming a crisis. Start there.
