When Being Too Nice Is Hurting Your Marriage – Playbook
This playbook is a field guide for one conversation. Read it before you say something honest. Come back if things get difficult.
Before You Start
Get clear on one thing before you open your mouth.
What do you want her to know? Not a lecture. Not a list of grievances. One specific thing that’s been sitting unsaid. Name it in one sentence before you start.
Check your intention. Are you saying this to get closer, or to release pressure? If it’s the second, wait a day. These scripts are built for connection, not venting.
Pick the right moment. Not mid-task. Not when she’s stressed or tired. A neutral evening or weekend morning. Give this some room.
Step 1: Open Simply
Don’t build up to it. Say it early, low-pressure.
“There’s something I’ve been holding back and I want to tell you.”
Or, for a smaller preference moment:
“Actually, I’d rather do it this way.”
Keep your voice easy. This doesn’t need to feel like a serious announcement.
Step 2: Use the Right Script for the Situation
If you’re expressing a preference:
“I know I usually just go with whatever works for you. I’m trying to be more honest about what I actually want.”
If you’re naming something that’s been sitting:
“When [specific situation], I felt [feeling]. I didn’t say anything at the time but I’ve been carrying it. I’m not angry about it. I just didn’t want to keep holding it.”
If you’re setting a limit:
“I said yes earlier but that doesn’t actually work for me. I don’t want to say yes and then feel resentful. Can we find something that works for both of us?”
If you’re expressing a frustration without turning it into a fight:
“When [situation happened], I felt dismissed. I don’t think you meant it that way. I just want you to know how it sat with me.”
If you’re naming the bigger pattern:
“I’ve spent a lot of years saying yes when I meant something else, or staying quiet about things that bothered me. I want to try something different. I might get it wrong. But I’d rather be honest than keep the peace and keep feeling like I’m not really here.”
Step 3: Let Her Respond
Don’t fill the silence. After you say your piece, stop talking.
If she responds well, let it breathe. Don’t over-explain.
If she goes quiet, say: “Take your time. I’m not going anywhere.”
If she gets defensive, say: “I’m not trying to criticize you. I just wanted to tell you how I felt.”
If she brings up her own grievances, say: “Okay. Tell me what you’ve been carrying. I want to hear it.”
Adapt by How You Communicate
If you tend to avoid conflict and keep the peace (Connector):
Start with the smallest script. A preference about something that doesn’t matter much. Build the muscle before you tackle anything with real stakes.
If you tend to go quiet when things get tense (Withdrawer):
Before anything else, name where you are: “I have something I want to say but I’m still finding the words.” That one sentence keeps her from filling the silence with the worst interpretation.
If you tend to get intense or loud when you feel unheard (Escalator):
Do a quiet practice run first. Say the script to yourself and notice where your voice wants to get louder. That’s where you slow down and drop your volume before you say it to her.
If you tend to get defensive when criticized (Defender):
If she responds to your honesty with a complaint, don’t counter immediately. Try: “Let me just hear you. I’ll share my side after.”
Adapt by How She Responds
If It Goes Sideways
- She gets defensive: “I’m not trying to criticize you. I just wanted to tell you how I felt.”
- She shuts down: “Take your time. I’m not going anywhere.”
- She brings up old things: “Tell me what you’ve been carrying. I want to hear it.”
- It falls flat: Don’t write it off. One conversation doesn’t change a long-standing pattern. Come back in a few days.
What Success Looks Like
You said something honest and you didn’t back away from it when she responded.
She seemed more engaged or curious than usual, even if it was a little uncomfortable.
You’re not looking for a perfect response. You’re looking for a real one.
